TRADE RECIPROCITY IN THE PACIFIC
THE HOBART CHAMBER OF COM. MERCE CONFERENCE. (Rec. March 28, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, March 27. The Hon. F. E. Winchombo, M.L.C. (President of the Sydney Chamber 'of Commerce), discussing the recent resolutions of the Hobart Chamber of Commerce Conference, said that while all favoured trade reciprocity within the Empire, there was diversity of opinion as to the extent to which it should bo applied. While some felt that the free exchange of commodities between Australia and Canada would be mutually a similar door ajar between Australia and New Zealand would be unfair to certain of the Commonwealth States, particularly Tasmania. It was contended that the Tasmanian farmers depended upon the protected position of the Australian markets, therefore a free entry for Now Zealand oats, potatoes, and peas would he ruinous to them. The Conference adopted this view and decided to suegest that the Federal Government should re-open negotiations with Canada and New Zealand, advocating reciprocity with due regard to the protection of tho interests of the individual States.
