BLOCKADE PIRATES BRITISH STEAMER SUNK THE OUTRAGE ON DUTCH SHIPPING FRENCH SUCCESS IN ALSACE WAR PREPARATIONS ON ITALIAN FRONTIER To-day's war news indicates that the preliminary operations to a formidable attack by the Allied warships in the Dardanelles have begun. The mine-sweepers have gone into the deadly zone to clear the way, and it is announced that twenty-five ships of the first line are to engage in the main attack. Meanwhile the condition of affairs in Constantinople is said to be desperate; the Turks are said to have only a few days' supply of ammunition. Field-Matshal Von der Goltz—popui larly supposed to have been mysteriously murdered by Turkish assassins—has appeai'ed in Sofia, and is credited with the statement that he foFesaw the catastrophe which is about to descend 'upon the ill-starred war party in Turkey. On the Western battle-front the French have achieved fresh successes in Alsace; there have been local successes elsewhere along the line, and the Allies' airmen have successfully conducted disconcerting raids upon tlio enemy's military property. In the Carpathians, the Austrians are putting up a desperate resistance to the Russian advance, and a stubborn battle is still being fought along that great mountain barrier. . The Russian offensive in-Northern Poland is being contested by German counter-attacks, but progress is being maintained. The German pirate blockade only accounted for three ships last week. The latest victim is the British steamer Delmira, which was lost largely through the refusal of her panic-stricken Chinese crew to carry out the cap- • tain's orders. The Dutch people are incensed over the Medea incident, and a special meeting of Cabinet has been called.
