The Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, Post-master-General,. went to Christchurch by the ferry steamer on Saturday night. He will be absent from Wellington for a few. days. Mr. M. Myers, of Wellington, was a passenger by the steamer. Niagara from Auckland on Friday. Mr. Myers, who is accompanied by Mrs. Myers, intends to tour Canada and the United States. Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, late Minister of Customs, will leave Wellington on Thursday next for San Francisco, en route to Canada and ultimately England, where he will probably reside for some time to come. Mr. Fisher is to be entertained by his friends and supporters to-morrow evening. Mr. Fisher was entertained at dinner in Bellamy's on Saturday evening by tho members of the Ministry. .Dr. D. Lloyd Clay has been appointed honorary physician on the visiting staff of the Wellington Hospital in place of Dr. W. Kington Fyffe, who has gone to the front. As the result of a deputation which waited on him on Friday, Mr. W. H. Bennett, the well-known builder and contractor, has decided to allow himself to be nominated for a seat on the City Council. Among tho many messages of condolence which Mrs. Maguire r.eceived on' tho death of ter husband,- Mr. Allan Maguire, is ,tho following from the Right Hon. W. F. Massev: —"I havo just heard with deep regret tho news of your husband's death. Please allow me to express my sincere sympathy with you and your family in your great loss. The late Mr. Maguire, whom I knew personally,' l was a worthy and highlyesteemed folonist, and did much to assist the work of building up our Dominion. His passing away will be mourned by a very wide circle of friends." The members of the Plimmer-Hall Patriotic Company leave for Palmerston North by this morning's train. The v death of Mr. Thomas Smith, a pioneer settler in the Wairarapa, at the age of 03, is announced by the "Wairarapa Standard." He came to New Zealand in IS4O in the Duke of Roxburgh. The family consists of two sons, Thomas (Auckland) and David (Perth, W.A.), and two daughters, Mesdames C. F. Goodrich (South Featherston) and Donald (Onehunga). Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife, who died in 1908 at the age of 88 years. A memorial service was held in the Webb Street Methodist Church yesterday, out of respect to the lato Mr. George Luke. The following members of the Highland Rifle Club have joined the reinforcements:—Riflemen G. Morison, C. Davidson, F. Pinckaey, J. Gardiner, H. Williamson, G. Phillips, A. Archer, A. Ferguson, J. M'Glade, W. Shields, J. Anderson, C. Bremner. Mr. and Mrs. P. B. La Morte, of Napier, were among the passengers who sailed on the Niagara from Auckland on Friday. They propose making an extended trip abroad. Captain H. L. de F. Garland, N.Z.S.C., has 'arrived at district headquarters, Auckland, and is to perform temporarily tho duties of assistant staff officer. The Rev. John Dawson, president of the New Zealand Methodist Conference, has returned from a visit to Auckland.

Mr. H. M'Girr, the Wellington representative crdicketer, who returned from Samoa recently (where he has been doing garrison' duty) took his place among the eleven of the East Club in the match against Petone on Saturday afternocn. He got rather little cricket in Samoa, but on one occasion startled the Natives by taking six wickets for nine runs in the first innings, and eight wickets for twelve luns in the second innings. Dr. A. Eisdell Moore, of Mount Eden, Auckland, who has been stationed for some months at Aldershot, as lieutenant in the Royal Field Ambulance, has been transferred to tho British Base Hospital at Boulogne.
