AMBULANCE SATURDAY
« — 6 ' ' d A SATISFACTORY COLLECTION. i, l \ e The citizen* who ventured out of if doors on Saturday, either to hurry p through the, tasks of the morning or to dawdle through the idle afternoon, was beset not infrequently nor yet unpleasantly by ladies, mostly young, wearing on their arms the badge of the Order «. of St. John, and bearing or brandishing, LI as occasion seemed to • demand, very ■- business-like _ collection-boxes. For " peuco. or shillings or the rarer coins these ladies pleaded most diligently, 2 and, generally speaking, the people were not mean. Of late there have been many calls on purses, which are something lighter "already by reason of in- ® creased expenses or diminished income, so that it was impossible to hope for any new .records in the fw-il/u'anoa collection, good as the cause might • be. In view of all the circumstances, the result achieved—a total collection of £210 Bs. 4d.—-must be accounted a very satisfactory one indeed, and one on 0 which the secretary'of the association . (Mr. H. B. Bainbridge) and his band of helpers deserve congratulation.
