\ CECIL HUMPHRIES IDENTIFIED, s Mr. Cecil Humphries, who was decor--3 ated,:with the Distinguished Conduct ) Medal on the battlefield in Northern d' France by Brigadier-General Strickland, a 'particularly high honour, is believed to li'e a former resident of Christchurch, where he was well known in football and volunteering circles. ' Mr. Humphries is the som (by'hfer first marriage), of Mrs'. Rouse, yho was the lessee of the Excel.sior Hotel, opposite the Clock Tower, in Manchester Street, Christchurch, and many who have stayed at that hotel dur- • , ing that lady's occupancy will remember i the many qualities possessed by young r Humphries. Some three years ago Mrs. j Rouse went to England and became •pro--0 prietress of a hotel in or adjacent to . London, and it was known in Wellington j that her son had enlisted in the' Army ] Service Corps shortly after the outbreak 3 of hostilities. It is the first honour of 3 the kind bestowed on a New Zealander j on a European battlefield, and is an instance of the type of New Zealander who answered the call in England.
