The Hon. W. H. Hemes goes north to-day to Hamilton. He will return on Saturday. Mr. H. Otterson, who is resigning from his position as Clerk of the House of Representatives, after 44 years' service on the House Staff, will leave Wellington to-morrow for Sydney en route to South Africa, where he intends to reside. ' A Press Association message from 'Auckland states that advico has been received of the death of Second Lieutenant Eric Hardwick Tayler, of the Ist Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly of Auckland. Ho ■was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Archdale Tayler, of Auckland. So far as is known. Lieutenant Tayler had heen serving with his regiment in the trenches in Northern France for about •a fortnight, when ho contracted a severe attack of pneumonia, and was removed to the. Military Hospital at Hazebrouck, where he died. In addition to his son, the late Private Ham, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, fatally founded in action near the Su«z Canal, Mr. W. E. Ham, of Motueka, has lost two cousins and a nephew, in the war. Two of' nieces are serving as nurses at the front. Miss E. A. Hastings, who died at West Lyttelton on Monday, was the eldest daughter of the late Sir Charles Hastings, M.D., of Worcester, England,, who was th 4 founder of the British Medical Association, and a lineal, descendent. of Warren Hastings, Gov-ernor-General of India. Miss Ha-stings .arrived in thoicolony in the early 'seventies,' and at first resided at "Homebrook," Southbridge. In 1886 she settled in Lyttelton, where she resided till the time of her death. Mr. R. E. Sinclair, mercantile agent of Wellington will be a candidate for the Harbour Board/in the interests of payers of dues other than on ships at the next flection, which is to be held on April 28. j

Prior to his leaving the firm of Murray, Roberts and Co., Wellington, to go oil active service, Lieutenant L. V. Hulbert was presented with a gold wrist Watch and a case, of pipes and tobacco pouch. Mr. J. Webster, secretary of the firm, made the presentation.

At this afternoon's 1 meeting of the iWellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, the completion of Dr. EardwickSmith's term as superintendent of the Hospital will be marked by the presentation to that gentleman of a handsome-l.y-bound album, containing the photographs of members of the board. It-is' improbable that Dr. T. H. Mortensen, marine .biologist of the Copenhagen Museum, who is on a two years' tour of the world, and who is at present in the North 'Island, will visit Christchurch. Dr.' Mortensen is collecting specimens of sea life, and accompanied Dr. Charles Chilton, biologist at Canterbury College, in a recent trip round the North Island in the Hinemoa. Writing to Dr. Chilton on January 26 from Hastings, where he was visiting his brother, .'Dr. Mortensen said he would return to Wellington on February 15, and leave for Sydney on the 19th. He hoped'to do some dredging oil the 16th and 17th, being anxious to secure some specimens of sea Urchins.
