SOLDIERS' SPORTS

GALAtDAY AT TRENT HAM

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

Trentham as wo have grown to know it of late is a place of serious business of the military order that is convincing in its earnestness. Saturday saw a change, however. It day, and officers and men alike ohtcred heartily into the spirit of the day and the entertainment of their friends. Ine weather was gloriously fine, and\with this'encouragement many visitors journeyed out. Among the guests were tho Right Hon. W. F. Massey and Mrs. Massey, Colonel Gibbon and staff. The grandstand was ' naturally tho chosen, point of vantage to view the sports, and this the visitors liberally availed themselves of, making, with the gaily-coloured frocks and the.', more sombre tone of khaki, a striking picture. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the . troopors, while the camp's band was no small factor in the enjoyment of the day. ' The p-eliminary sports events were got off in the morning, thus facilitating the afternoon's work; In, all there were twenty-three competitions, and in some instances the prize-money—entirely from the Camp Fund—went well over £20 for a single first. Not the least impressive were the rifle and drill and bayonetrfighting events. In _the firstnamed one obtained a good idea of the valuable wo-k done at the camp. It seems almost incredible that the men there—some only raw recruits a while back—could have in such short time reached so high a standard of efficiency. A word of praise is due to the secretary (Sergeant G. Priest). He was untiring in his endeavours 'fl seeing «> everyone's' comfort, and the commend-, able way he handled his work accounts to a large extent for the success of the gathering.
