NOTES AND COMMENTS

by tho Moldavia, which arrived at Sydney last week, included R. Wootton, sen., who intends to once again settle in Sydney. So enthusiastic has the steeplechase rider, Clarence O'Neill, become over trotting (says the "Argus"), that he informed the Melbourne Trotting Club stewards at Richmond that Tie would "give ten years of his life" to pilot a trotting horse to victory. "I have only taken part in three trotting races," added O'Neill. "The first time I finished seoond, the second time I was thrown off, and to-day I am called before tho stewards." The. stewards had "carpeted" O'Neill after hei had driven Rosa Direct with poor judgment in the first race. They tendered tho versatile horseman some good advice regarding tho best position to hold while competing in stubbornly-contested events such as are invariably witnessed on that course, and tho loquacious jockey was profuse in his thanks. Phosphorous is nicely treated in the Takapuna Cup with 7st. 31b. opposite his name. Tho bay gelding will be ridden by C. Browne. The Takapuna Cup Meeting takes place to-morrow and Saturday. The favourite fancy for tho Cup and Stewards' Handicap is Goldsize and Soultano, both of whom, it is understood, will be ridden by B. Deeley. At Clarevillo J. Gravestock is again hacking Nedra about the roads, and in a few weeks he will put her into work to get her ready for the jumping season. Bransfield will also join tno activo brigade shortly. R. Young, who was disqualified for 12 months at tho recent Marton meeting. has notified the Distriot Committee at Wanganui that he is aggrieved at the decision and intends to appeal. The matter will be hoard on Wednesday next. H. Cairns, who has been on a business visit to Wellington, is returning to Melbourne oil Friday. The All Black horse Football is to join Mr. E. J. Watt's Randwick team, and will bo shipped to Sydney on Friday. W. O'Halloran will bo riding at t'lie Egmont meeting, after which ho will return to Melbourne to take lip his engagement to ride the horses owned by Mr. A. T. Creswick. ■ A. Oliver expects to be able to leave the Hospital on Saturday next. Mr. R, H. Skipwith has been apwrlntea !>Urtee to tli<! Giabgru? Racing .Club and Mi. R. & Earlay, Ju« recei?«~ -

cd a similar appointment to the Ashburton Club. Boa lias liad a bad attack of strangles. She is now showing signs of improvement, but will not be raced again this season. Nominations for the Dannevirko Racing Club's Autumn Meeting close on Saturday, February 6, with the club's secretary, Mr. Robert Taklo.

It was decided by Tattorsall's Committee that all bets on Maxim IV, winner of the Plodders' Steeplechase at Nottingham, on October 27, were void, the owner and nominator of the horse having been killed in battle on October 12. Backers of Lincoln Lindutn, ivho finished second, became entitled to receive. In like manner, bets on Sirs. Buzley, who ran for the College Nursery at Windsor on November 7, were void, the owner and nominator having boon killed in action on November 6. At the recent Trentham meeting the filly Taringamufcu appeared on the racecard as owned by "Mr. G. Cecil," and on the third day as owned by Mr. G. Nash. There lias been some "comment on this. states that the filly has always been entered in his name, was raced in his name at Tauherenikau, and the fact that it was entered on the Trentham card as belonging to "Mr. Cecil" was no fault of his. Neither was it the fault of his trainer.

With' reference to a rccent note in this column concerning items of interest which appeajed in "Deutscher Sport" (says "Vigilant" in the London "Sportsman"), Herr Ehlers, the editor of our contemporary, writes me "that, unlike 'Le Sport Beige' and the French sporting papers," his paper "never ceased to appear, but that since October 1 it is only published twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays." He adds: "We are the only sporting paper" (in Germany presumably) "which has regularly published, from August 1, English racing results, and a lot of our sportsmen applauded this sporting manner of keeping up the old custom." While giving Herr Ehlers credit for keeping "Deutscher Sport" going, I should like to point out for his benefit that had Berlin been in a similar plight to Brussels, and ; in the early stages of the war, Paris, he might not now be in a -position to plume himself at the 1 expense of "Le Sport Beige" and the French sporting papers. "Le Sport Beige," by the way, is now temporarily published in London, but the whirligig of war time brings about curious chaages, and-even Berlin, in the fullness of time, may find, itself in the position of Brussels, or Paris, in the early days of the war. Should that dread eventuality arise, "Deutscher Sport," no doubt, will still be published as usual—if not in Berlin., possibly in Constantinople. The Australian-bred mare Multum In Parvo is to make her first appearance under silk in the Dominion at Riccarton on February 6. Considering that she only raced twice in Sydney this season, and each time was unplaced, Mr. Henrys will be at a loss to know how to weight her at Riccarton. It is understood that the retainer given the well-known horseman, F. W. M'Cabe, to ride the Karamu horses expires ijext month, .and that next season M'Cabe will again be found riding over obstacles in Melbourne.
