PREVENTION OP CRUELTY.

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The fortnightly meeting of the committee of the Society for. the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last night. Mr. V. Jt. Meredith presided over a large attendance. The secretary presented a report to the society in respect to a communication received from the Taranaki Society, Btating.that it had been.brought under their notice that much unnecessary suffering was inflicted upon pigs wMle in transit on the railway through being confined a long time in trucks, and 1 through. being without water. Before taking action, the Taranaki Society asked for information on the matter. The secretary stated that he had replied to the letter stating that there were no regulations for the carnage of live stock issued by the Agricultural Department, but forwarded a copy of railway orders in this respect Mr. F. Meadowcroft was elected to a vacancy on the committee In his report to the society, the inspector reported on various cases of cruelty to animals which he had discovered and l remedied. The inspector mentioned the discovery of two horses at Upper Hutt .which were unfit for work, and which had been sold by the Defence Department for 10s. each, a week previously, on the understanding that they were to be immediately slaughtered. : The Defence officer interviewed in this respect had stated that he would send an officer and men to take the horses away from the present owner and have them, destroyed. The report also mentioned that' the City Council had erected a hew iron water trough at the junction •of the Karori ana Northland Roads, at the place asked for by the committee. Subscriptions were received 1 and acknowledged as follow for the past fortnight:—Kirkcaldie and Stains, £1 Is.; B. W. Gotch, £1; Findlay, Dalziel and Sim, 10s. 6d.; Mrs. Seville, 10s.; Dr. Anderson, Mrs. L. Smith, Simmonds and Osborne,' Windsor Manufacturing Company, W. Wolland, Wellington Investment Company, Sykes and Co., 6s. each; C.A.R., 45.; Miss S. Senile, V.8.W., W. Cook, P. Ahradson, Schaefer and Co., M. Morton, H. Brice, Hood Bros, A Friend, 2s. 6d. each; total, £6 3s. ■
