Carden Party and Sale of Work. The garden party and sale of work which was held on Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the Presbyterian Womon's Mission Union for the benefit of the Home Missions was most successful. Mrs. 'J. Kirkcaldio had placed- her garden at the disposal of trie union, 'i'lio pretty grounds were looking their best in the bright sunshine; a band stationed on tho terrace in front of the house played a varied programme of music during the afternoon. Stalls were placed on the lawn below, sheltered from the winds _by trees and tho high bank, and their contents rapidly disappeared under the assaults of the. many purchasers. They were in charge of the following:—Handkerchief,• d'oy. ley, and cushion stall, Mrs. Low, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Hayes, and Mrs. Bird; flowers ajid produce, Mrs. Gorrie, Mrs. Bennett, Mrs.' Gibbs, Mrs. Kirker, and Miss Low; sweets, Sister Norali and the Girls' Bible class; cakes, Mrs. Shirer and St. James' Church ladies ;' aprons, Mrs. Spear, Miss .M'Gowan, and Miss iatenhouse. Afternoon tea was handed 1 round' outside, buffots having been placed on the sheltered side of the house. Mrs. Low, (with the assistance of 'several ladies, was in charge. There were several helpers for' each of the stalls, and by the end of the afternoon the fund had benefited considerably. Among the many visitors was the Hon. J. u. W. Aitken.

Belgian Christmas Shilling Fund. The response to the appeal for subscriptions to the Belgian Shilling Fund has been prompt and generous. In Wellington alone the ladies have collected over. £500 in a few days; and the committee has no doubt that similar -results have been obtained elsewhere. Much, however, remains to be done. The sum that tho committee set out to raise is £20,000, and only a fortnight and a few days remain m which to collect it. The committee hegs to acknowledge the following amounts: — W. G. Massey, who has been • confined to her room with sickness for the past four or five weeks, is gradually recovering, and hopes,to he able to leave'; it soon. . ' Owing to the strong wind which was blowing' on Saturday afternoon- the annual pionic of the Port Nicholson Yaohting Club, which was to have heen held at Day's Bay, was abandoned, and members instead 1 entertained their friends at the Boat Harbour, at Clyde Quay. Several dinghy races tor yachtsmen, boys, and girls, and other interesting events were held, and much interest was centred ia the yachting races outside. Tea was provided by the club members, and a very pleasant af-ternoon-.was spent. • The hon. treasurer for the Countess of Liverpool Fund for the Expeditionary Forco reports further contributions as follow:—From G.W.9., IBs.; Levin ladies (further contribution), £1 Bs. 6d.; per Mrs. Bernian (matinee), £24 176.: per Mrs. Bernian' (being; proceeds or social concert, etc), £33 2s. 6d. A garden fete is to ho held at the Convent of the Sacred Heart (Island Bay) on Tuesday afternoon in aid of the Belgian Fund, and Her Excellency tho Countess of Liverpool will open it at half-past two. There will be a sale of sweets, .fancy work, and flowers, and' several side-shows have'been arranged as well as a short concert. The financial results will bo augmented by the proceeds of tho disposal of a Teneriffo bedspVead, now on view at the Dresden, which ' will bo drawn by the Belgian Consul, the Hon. C. J. Johnston, on December 15. Invitations have been issued by Mr. and .Mrs. J. F. Clapshaw for the wedding of their , daughter to Mr. Ralph Benner at St. Peter's Church on. -Wednesday. ■ The : funeral of the late Mrs. Johanah Polsen took' place at* the Greytown Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Johnson (4), and Knutsem (2), all fellow-passengers of tho deceased when she came out to New Zealand in 1875. The Rev. A. W. H.cCompton conducted the burial service. Among tho visitors to Napier ara Mr; G. Reid, Mr/Choy, and Mrs. G.-Blom-tield, of Wellington. , Mr- R. Collins passed through Napier on Saturday from Wellington en route to Taupo. Mr. and Mrs. R. Tumbultj have returned to Napier after a holiday in Wellington. . ' ' Mr. and Mrs. R. Collins and Mr. D, Kennedy motored through to Napier from Wellington on Friday and left on Saturday for Taupo, Rotorua, and Auckland. The Dominion Bazaar in aid of St: Joseph's parish brought its business to a close at the Palais De Danse on Saturday evening, when there was a reoord attendance of eager buyers, and splendid business was done at all the stalls and side-shows. During tho ovening the Grand - Art Union was drawn and . also similar competitions (tho names of the prizewinners appear in another column). This evening a social evening will be held at tho Palais De Danso when the stall attendants and performers will be entertained.
