JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL (From Our Special Correspondents.) MASTERTON. < ; The best cards handed in for the fourball medal handicap, played on the Masterton Golf Club's links on Saturday, were those of J. Sellar and H. Uonald. Sheep-worrying by dogs has been very prevalent in the Gladstone district of late. One settler has lost thirty lambs. At a. meeting of stewards of the Masterton Racing Club on Saturday it was decided that no liquor whatever be provided by .the club at its next meeting; The To Wharau" Chess Club has challenged the Masterton Club .to a match, to he played at a convenient (late. . \ ' Mr. Harry Lauder has decided to give a matinee in Masterton on Thursday. _ His engagements will not permit time to give a night performance here.' Councijlor Joseph Dawson has resigned his ■ position as chairman of the Eketahuna County Council, owing to pressure of business. He has boon succeeded by Councillor T. Moss. FEATHERSTON. The opening of the new Roman Catholic Church at Featherstou took place on Sunday, the consecration ceremony being performed by His Grace Archbishop OJSliea, assisted by tho Very Rev. Dean M'Kenna, and. the Rev. Father Kinkead. In the morning eighteen candidates were presented for confirmation. An evening service was also held, the church being crowded on both occasions. The altar was beautifully decorated with flowers, this being the work of Mra. D. B. S. Riddiford and Miss Card. Music -was supplied by the Church Choir from Carterton, helped by Featherston members. In the afternoon a reception by tho parishioners .was held in. the Town Hall, when there was a large gathering of tho townspeople.. The Archbishop was presented with an illuminated address of welcome from the pa.ish, which was read by Miss ' Rita Card. The new church., is'built in a. prominent part of it'tid town, and is very attractive in appearance. It contains a memorial window to the late Mrs. Hanna Card (who died in 1912), which was provided by subscriptions; of '.friends of the family and residents.' .; OTAKI. _ A' patriotic carnival on a large scale is to be held at: Waikanae .on Wednesday; but as it has.been fixed for the same day as. the Horowhenua Trotting Club's meeting the attendance may be .seriously affected. '■• It is intended to resuscitate the old Otaki Rifle-Club.' The old club has .never disbanded..' Several members are willing, to act, while, many new'members will doubtless oifer their services. Mr. Carkeek has interviewed the' authorities, and states that there will be no difficulty' about the club being accepted as a defence corps. Mrs. George Fairley, who recently underwent' an operation- at the Otaki Hospital, is making good progress towards recovery.
