A man named Thomas Green,- a rabbiter employed at Mangaohane Station, attempted to cut his throat with a razor on Friday, but was prevented from doing so by another station hand. Green was' brought before the Police Court on Saturday and was remanded.

A small herd "of deer were seen in the vicinity of Hihitahi last week for the first time. The play-off between Fire Brigade and Hibernians, in connection with the cribbage tournament, resulted in a win for the Fire Brigade by. 11 games to 9. The balance-sheet in connection with the recent hospital ball showed a! credit of £90, of which represents the result of the efforts of the Ladies' Committee. v . A_ meeting of the Executive of the Wairarapa Farmers' Union was held at Carterton en' Friday afternoon and was well attended. It was decided to ask the members of all committees to personally canvass their respective districts and make sure that every farmer'ploughs and sows every available acre he has in wheat, oats, barley, turnips, etc., with the object of assisting towards a plentiful food supply for tho Empire. It was pointed out that one farmer might have the land and another a nlougb and a team, and no land available. Tho duty of the committee, is to see that every farmer, for the cause of the Empire, assists every other farmer. "The loyalty of the farmer," sticl one member,' "will be showu by his willingness to sow his lands and provide foodstuffs."

. At Messrs. Turnbull and Co.'s stock fcale here on Friday, the first lamb of tho season was offered for sale on behalf of tho War Fund. - The lamb was given by Mr. W. Howard Booth, and after passing from hand to hand realised £7 10s. .Two heifp-r calves, donated to the Fund by To Whaite family, realised £7. OTAKI. The many friends of Mr; A. J. S. Thomson, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, will regret that he is-scriously indisposed.
