DEATH OF. THE JESUIT GENERAL. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright Rome, August 20. • Tho Tope's death was almost simultaneous with that of Father Fraucesco Wornz, head of the Jesuits, and known as "The Black Pope." Father Francesco Wernz constantly prayed for an Austro-Gennan victory.It is doubtful whether the Chapter of Jesuits will bo able to elect a new General during the war, as they do i not enjoy the privileges of cardinals. Father Francis Xavier Wernz was elected General of the Society of Jesus in 1906. Ho was born at Rottwell, ;\Vurtemberg, in 1842, and entered the society in 1657. He was Professor of the Gregorian College from 1883 to 1904, end Rector from 1904 to 1906.' He was Cousultor to the Sacred Congregations of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, or the Index and of the Consistory and of the Holy Office. He published a work on Canon Law in four volumes. - The General of the. Jesuits is elected by a congregation of professed members in which each province is represented by the provincial and two elected fathers. Hβ holds office for life, and 13 advised by a council of five assistants, whose recommendations, however, he is at liberty to disregard. The genoral delegates the administration of the several provinces to certain chosen representatives, termed provincials, and he further appoints the head-superiors or all novitiates, colleges, and professed houses or residences. The Society' has been ruled by 25 Generals and four vicars from its foundation till the present time. Neither France, its original cradle, nor England, has ever given it a head, while Spam, Italy, -Holland, Belgium, , Germany, and Poland have all been repreeented. ;
