It is asserted that tho murderer's family is not free from insanity; : 11. Jean JauTes was a leading member of the French Chamber of Deputies, and a. member.of the Socialist Party. A relative of tho Admiral of the'same name, he was born on September 3, ' 1859, at Castrcs,, ill the Soutli Frehclii department of Tarn. Aftir a distinguished college career, he became Professor of Philoso-' phv, first at Albi, and then at- Toulouse. Ho took the.degree-of Doctor in 1892, and' one of his thoses for the doctorate,dealt with the German scientific Socialists, Lassalle and Marx. He was first elected deputy, in 1895. He;is editor of "La Petite Eepubliqije," and\has attempted to reunite the different groups j of Frenob Socialists. He was much to the fore in the defence of Contain Dreyfus.
