CHARITY CUP COMPETITIONS FIRST ROUND COMPLETED

Saturday afternoon saw the tat round in this Charity Cup competition completed. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Y-M.C.A. by Rovers by two goals to one. The latter team deserved' their victory on account of the hard fight put up. Diamonds gayo Corinthians all they wanted, and 'it took the Readers for the Championship all their time to save themselves from being "knocked out" in the first round for the Cup. Had it not beefa for "Wanderers' goalkeeper, Thistle would have put up a. much bigger score against their opponents than thoy did. As it was the Scotchmen left the field winners by two goals to nil. Throughout the first half play was of an even character. Both goal-keepers wero in fine form and on several occasions they were responsible for saving their respective sides. Porteous, Thistle's custodian, was quite equal to all the demands made upon him and the result' was, that at halftime neither side "had scored. During the second half the game livened up considerably. Thistles pressed their opponents 'hard, but the defence, and' Webster, were too solid, At'last, Ferguson found an opening and. scored sfirst blood for Thistle. Wanderers now took up the attack in earnest, and kept the Blues on tlio alert. It did not last long, however, and suddenly Thistle's forwards got away together and carried all before them. The result was a goal and the game ended as indicated. CORINTHIANS—DIAMONDS. Kilbirnie Park was the scene of an exciting game between those old opponents—Diamonds and Thistle. The game was closely contested throughout, and both sides played with good combination. From start to finish the game was full of interest. The Diamond's backs were superior; to those of the opposing side, but Corinthian's forwards were "out on their own." The match' attraoted considerable attention and at one stage it looked as if Diamonds would win. . An accident happened to Kestle, however, and ,he was compelled to leave the field. The game ended in a win for Corinthians by 2 goals to nil.

Y.M.C.A.—ROVERS. 111-judged kicking lost Y.M.C.A'. their game against Hovers. Within a little while or the opening of the encounter Hovers were penalised. Roberts took the kick and scored. ii.M.C.A., 1; Hovers, nil. Forward play by Y.MIC.A. gave; them another chance, but Heap, the opposing 'keeper, saved. l'lay struggled on for some time until a freekick was given against Y.M.C.A., and Elford, for Rovers, shot for goal. Hollis made an excellent save. Y.M.C.A., however, wore-again immediately penalised for hands, and Elford again took the kick. Hollis tihis time failed. Y.M.C.A., 1; Rovers, 1.- _ Tho second half 'saw 'Rovers' backs in useful action. 'Y.M.C.A. secured' a corner, and-with the resulting -kick Heap blocked well. Y.M.C.A. forwards pressed hard for some time, being ably assisted by their backs, but their efforts wero futile. Rovers got under way at length, and Hart made two attempts to score, but the first time the b'all went over tho.bar, and the second time it struck the bar. Elford, however, again came into the limelight, and coming down the field by dribbling rushes, 6ent the leather safely home. Rovers, 2; Y.M.C.A., 1. The close of the matoh saw no change in the scores, Mr, Lithgow was tlio referee. HOSPITAL—SWIFTS. x Hospital defeated Swifts by 7 to nil. Heath and Hughes, for the Poriruans, opened up matters wil(li a lively bombardment of tho Swifts' goal, but inaccuracy ruined, the attempts. Richards and the Guise brothers, in the town team's forward line, made a rattling endeavour, to bring play to a head in their favour, but Cross was too good for them. Penlington; in-,goal for. Rovers, was a power. His brilliancy was outstanding; but the sustained attack was too determined, and Hugbes, taking a-.pass from Duncan, scored.' This was the only goal obtained in first'half. On the resumption of piay, Hospital released the brake on their energies, and piled up their total ot seven goals. Elliott passed to Skinner, and the lastnamed' cleverly luring Penlington from his post, centred to Heath, who goaled. A corner followed, and Heath, taking the centre from Elliott, again scored. Roots, from a long drive, iscored the fourth goal, and Skinner tho fifth. Elliott, witih a neat run down-field, passed tho leather to Skinner, and the ball went'to the net for the sixth time. The seventh and fmalgoal of a. one-, sided game was obtainedhy Hughes and Daily. Mr. J. M. Wilson was the referee.

■ BROOKLYN—PETONE. At Petone, Brooklyn met Petone. Brooklyn won, tlhus registered their third win this season, and making Petone's nini)h loss. Petone played with seven men, and were reinforced later by two fifth division players. Not even mediocrity characterised the meeting, and tho game concluded with tho scores: Brooklyn, 3; Petone, nil.
