FIRE AT ISLAND BAY
SIX-IIOOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. '\A few minutes after one o'clock yesterday morning a six-roomed house, in Derwont Street, Island Bay, ownetLand pccupicd by Mr. George Jelley, was destroyed by fire.. Both*the Newtown and City firo brigades were in attendance, and were able 1 to prevent the fire spreading to the next house, which was slightly Complaints were made that the lire brigades did not handle tho outbreak in a very effective manner, and bad to shift the lioso three times before getting it to tho fire. Superintendent" Tait states'that, owing to the, excessive water pressure at Island Bay, the hose burst on two occasions,, once tfhen it got. kinked, and once, when jammed in tho fence. ,-Tta building was insured in-tlie State Fire Insurance Office for £580. and the contents' in tho Atlas Office for £250.
