ASSOCIATION.

[By Centre-Half.] Championship Table. As this afternoon will see the opening round of the Charity Cup competitions, the following table showing the position of tho. teams engaged in tho first division championship is interesting:—

■"S£p J I o 6 Corinthians 12 11 10 47' 9 23 Hospital ... 11 9 11 49 7 19 Y.M.C;A. ... 11" 5 3 3 17 16 13 Diamonds...- 11' "5 2-4 24 '17 12 .Thistle ..'.... 11 5 2 4 30 23 .12 Swifts ..'.... 11 3 3 5 13 23, 9 ■'Wanderers ■:.;■"■ 8 "■% -2 4 6 22 6 Rovers ....:. 11 2 1 8.18 45 5 Brooklyn--..-; 10 ./2 0 8 9 28 4 Petone 8 0 17 6 27 1

Referees and, the Boys, " A very enjoyable" everting was spent on Tuesday at the'Boys r Institute; where about'loO boys Assembled to hear several well-known referees lecture on the rules of the Association game. Messrs. H. G. Mayer, G. K. Dick' J. A. Leddy, A. E. Wells, F. O'Connell, W. J. Taylor, A. Webster, and W. Duncan attended for the purpose of giving lectures and answering any, questions asked by the boys. At'the conclusion refreshmenEs,were provided. .. • • The Came* in Poverty Bay. "Centre-Halff has.had a most encouraging letter from .Mr, H..Binnie, hon. secretary of the Poverty Bay Football Association, -in which the writer states that the , game is making great strides in Gisbprne. : Several old Rugby, representatives are playing the roundball game this season, notably Kaupara, Miller, and Guthrie. These three players are-likely to find places in the Poverty Bay representatives this iseason. Mr.' Bmnie is endeavouring ip get the game into the schools. In fact, the whole committee are working hard in this direction, and the N.Z.F.A. is to be asked to send along half a dozen balls to encourage the youngsters. A burning question with these players now is visits from outside associations. This season they are expecting visits from Hawke'e Bay and Wanganui, and perhaps Waipukurau,, and are hoping that the promised, visit, from Wellington will eventuate. '■■ i .

Local.Fleld Notes. ~-,. Cummings, who at oiic time.played for the -defunct-St. John's Club, and was also seen among the Thistles, turned out witL Rovers 'last Saturday. Dick continues to play- in'the fullback, line of Diamonds. His kicking is hefty but uncertain. Why 'not let Auld play as right-full-back and Dick as right-half? .-.. '

Ives was seen for the first time this season in the ranks of the Corinthians. His disqualification expired . recently. He made a rattling good save against .Thistle last Saturday. Plaving rightback, he stepped a fast ball from Eowlands right on the goal-line, . catching the leather between his boots. The ■keeper, could not have looked at it. Regarding Thistle'.s goal-keeper he does hot impress one as a smart man. M'Carvdle could do far better. Thistle appear to have fallen on evil days. In their last four matches they obtained four goals to. 14 secured against'them. Ross is re-entering the arena of warfare under the flag of the • Diamonds. Last season he was unfortunate in , getting injured early in the season. To-day he will probably play cen-tre-half, and' Shawi-'who he' displaces, will play right-half or inside-right. ■_ Mills was an old , Thistle player Been in action last Saturday. He used to play fyr the, Scots about three seasons ago. '■ It is common;knowledge that tho first goal scored against Thistle on the Basin was] from off-side. O'Shea's posi-tion-was very doubtful., , Rickaby, on.lastSaturdhy's showing, was considered ; one of the best centre-" halves locally. His temperament though is somewhat highly strung, and so at times he is uncertain.
