ARTIFICIAL MANURES.

THE SUPPLY OF PHOSPHATES.

The Conference of A. and P. Societies yesterday considered the following remits:—' - :, .

'•'That action should be taken to obtain a.reduction in the'.present high cost ot artificial manures in the Dominion, either by representation through the Minister of Agriculture -or such -other manner,as'may be deemed advisable." That the Government should;, tip urged,.to take some/ steps to. increase , the supply of phosphatic manures, and also to increase the bonus for finding rock phosphates in Now Zealand." ''That where deposits of lime, are known to exist on Government land, the. Government should.be asked to take' steps, to ensure that ,-the farming community. should have every' facility for obtaining it at the lowest possible cost."

After discussion, it was resolved: "That -the remits should be referred to the Board of '. Agriculture for their special and favourable consideration, to lake, such action as they may think advsiable in the way of offering a bonus for the. discovery of phosphate 'deposits." . ;. • ';■■..

While these matters were under consideration, Mr. J'. A.. Pond, Government Analyst, said that'there are a great number, of small islands in ; . the Pacific which are not in.the hands of trusts, and would yield , suitable phosphates. Endeavours ;to secure supplies should not be confined to New Zealand. :

On three skeletons—two fcmalo and one male—found at • Moate Castle, Co. Westmeant, an inquest has just been held, a verdict of death by violence being tcturnod in accordance with the dootor's evidence, who said .the remains had been interred more, than 100 years. . .

CUSTOMS DUTY. Customs duty • collected' at the Port of Wellington for the month of July, 1914, amounted to £80,209 Bs. 4d. The amount collcnted for the VreekjCndin?
