THE TURF.

RANGITIKEI MEETING. SECOND DAY. BYRON WINS THE BIG RACE. (By Telezrapn.-Special Reporter.) Marton, March 26. The Rangitikei Racing Club's meeting concluded to-day in fine weather. Thero was a good attendanco and the amount put through the totalisator was £12,150, making a total of £24,858, or an increase of £3749 over the corresponding meeting last year. Epworth showed much improved form to-day, and had the Clifton Handicap won at any part of tho race. Aratia. tia, the favourite, got chopped out soon after the start, and was sent back several lengths. Powder Fox was run-

ning second round tho bend, but in tho straight Simple Sam displaced him, and challenged the leader, but could not roach the Feilding horse, who ran or well. ■'

Lubriline, despite hoi - big weight, was tlio best backed in the Rangitoto Hack Race, and after a great strugglo she won bv a head from Grey Guard, with Hoopoe and His Eminence a head away. The latter made the running to the distance, when Lubrilino appeared on the outside, aud Grey Guard and Hoopoe also put in challenges. The quartet crossed the line in a cluster amid great cheering. The winner is in at tho minimum in the Masterton Cup, and is now a good favourite. Huia, runner-up yesterday, started favourito in the Hack Hurdles to-day. Tho race was a most interesting one

for a niile, but then M'Caho, who kept Huia on the fonco the whole way, shot

him to thel front, and ho ran in an easy winner from Stockade, with Exotic (whoso rider finished without a saddle) in third place. Florist looked like troubling Huia, but sho ran off at the five-furlong post. The Diver made the pace for six furlongs, but ho was tailed off last at tho finish. M'Cabe, rider of the winner, was in a class by hinjself amongst tho horsemen, and his mount got up on the inside tho whole way. So far, the Australian horseman lias not been out of a place in any of his races in the Dominion.' Considering that the distance was nearly threo chains over the twelve . furlongs, tho gallop was an exceptionally good one. Orleans was at a very short price in tho Pukehou Hack Handicap, but the support was well justified, and ho had the race in his keeping at any stage of the journey. Te Hon Hou was well supported, but her weight beat her at tho finish, though she was only a head behind, . The third horse, Patroness, made most of the running, but Orleans ran past her with, ease in tho straight. The Conqueror gelding suffored l from a slight attack of colic last evening, but he.quickly got over it. Ratana was a.better favourite than' Byron in tho big handicap, but the latter scored nicely after leading over tho last half-mile. Tho pace was slow for the first part of the journey, when tho. field was led .by Braeburn. Byron then went to the front. Ratana came on in tho straight, but ran in from the whip, and this spoilt any chance he had. cf: winning. Braeburn was just behind tho third horse, and then camo Mescal and Moutoa Girl.

The hottest favourite of tho day went under in the Hack Welter Handicap. This- ■ was Papamarama. Ho pulled very hard for tho first six furlongs, and in the straight, after looking all over a winner, his big weight beat him, and he could onlydhiifih third" to Victoris, who got a nice, run on the fence, and Combustion, who got a bad passage in tho first part of tho race. St. Bees made the running for six furlongs, but he. was very sore, and could not see it out. _ After tho race, R. Young, rider of Victoris, was called before the stewards, _ and severely admonished for crossing tho start. The whole of.tho runners in the Raumai Welter Handicap wore evenly hacked. . Guiding Way was first out, and though 'challenged by Beyera! horses at various stages, ho stalled them off successfully, and won a good race by a length. Master Lupin -was second,' and Manitau just headed Austin on the post. It was a ,very fast race from the word "go," a\id the winner's per-' formanco was a good one.' In the Hack Scurry, Brunswick was the "fancy," and the Wanganui. geldduly arrived, but it was only after giving his backers a raro shock, as the margin was so oloso that no one but tho judge. could say whether ho had won. Had it not been for bad. luck entering tho straight, he would have won easily. Martlet and General Madero were out in front, and mado all the run-

ning. Sir Lupin, and Crown Land gavo bother at the, post, and the latter was left. Tyson, Powder Fox, and Crown Battery were scratched:
