Many old residents of Otago will learn with regret of tho death of Mr, Ralph Steele Nicolsoti, who died at Eglinton 011 Wednesday. Mr. Nicolfioa was bom at Kemback, Fifeshiro, on February 6, 1828, being tho second son of the Rev. Dr. Nicoison. well known for many years in Hobart. He caino to Otag<> with Mr. James Maeandrew and tho Hon. W. H. Reynolds in the schooner Titan, arriving in 1851. About two years later he crossed to Ilobart, and there carried on a chemist's business. In Hobart ho married a daughter of Mr, Leonard Pearson, in 1854. He returned to New Zealand by the brig Lady Dcnnistcm in October, 1863, and started storekceping oh the. O'lago diggings. He joinod the Mosgiel Woollen Company when, as a private concern, it was in tin: hands of Mr. A, J. Burns, ami became secretary of the company, hold--ins that position until laid aside by a paralytic stroke in March of ISP-G. Before Momiiiffton was constituted a borough, Mr. Nicoison was a member of tlio Road'' Board, and .afterwards he served as a councillor, being' made Mayor for the 1880-81 term.
