, Contrary to expectations, the weather [ cleared up on Saturday afternoon suffi- . eicntly to allow of those clubs which had , decided to open their greens for the , season to do so. Though the sun shone . out boldly after 2 p.m., the southerly breeze still held the chill of winter, and [ the greens wore naturally heavy, thougli , tlio soaking rains which fell on Friday [ night and early on Saturday morning. . Freeman). Mr. Dimock | said ho was delighted to see such a . large attendance, and on bohalf of tho . president extended a hearty welcome to , the visitors. On behalf of the president i and members, he wished to express special thanks to Messrs. Medland, Ar- . den, Hatch, and Murdoch for services kindly rendered by them duriug the recess. Ho was pleased to say that the greens wero tho best they had ever had, and ho congratulated .the caretaker, Mr.' Watts, on his energy and ability In producing suc'i results. Tho present membership of tho club was not all they could wish, but tho opening of other greens had had much to do with that. They expected to havo a rush of new members as soon as the perfect-playing Qualities of their greens wcro realised. A proposition had been made with reference to tho admittance of lady members. That was a matter that rested entirely with the ladies themselves. If they could find a sufficient number of ladies prepared to take up tho came, the club would be pleased to welcome them." (Applause.) They all joined in congratulating Mr. D. Munro on winning the single championship last year, and sincerely hoped that ho, or some other member of tho club, would bring such honours back this season. He tendered his thanks to the ladies, who had been good enough to cater for the comforts of tho inner man, and to thoso who had honoured the green with their ■ presence. Iffr. Palmer. Tliero was a good attendance of members, and visitors from Hataitai 'were weloomcd. The president in his address referred to the deaths of Messrs. Hopkins and Horno. He paid a tribute to tho green superintendent (Mr. W. Henry) and also the caretaker (Mr. M'Calluin) l'or their efforts in preparing and guarding the green. Continuing, he' was sorry that owing to. tho weather no games could bo played that day, but ho would invito thorn to attend tlio following Saturday and bring their wives and lady friends. Immediately afterwards the "jack" was thrown by tho green superintendent, and tho green was declared open. HUTT CLUB. The president, Mr. W. Callender, extended a hearty welcome to visitors to the Hutt Club's opening. Tho Green Committee, lio said, had tho green in iirst-rate order, but unfortunately they had to forbid any play. Tho tenuis and croquet players, too, wero disappointed as tho.v looked forward' to a iield day under Captain A. P. Brown. ,Tho club, 2r. Chllcnder added, was fortunate in having as patron, since its inception, the llou. J. Duthie, and he (tho president) had much pleasure in congratulating Mr. Duthio on tho honour con-' ?erreu on him, and hoped ho would bo long spared to use his knowledge on behalf. of tho Dominion. To tho retiring secretary, Mr. Rishworth, was presented a pair of rose bowls ,in appreciation of four years' sorvico, and to Mr. Soymour, tho retiring treasurer, Wis presented n silver-mounted pair of bowls in appreciation of three years' service. Messrs. Rishworth and Soy.mour, in a few well-chosen words, returned thanks. Apologies were received from tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Buunv). Mr. T. M. Wilford, and tlio Hon. Fraser. Tho green was formally detJXred open on Mrs. Callendcr throwing up tlio jack. Visitors were presont from Wellington, Scatoun, Ivelburne, To Hiwi, and several other clubs.
