Christchurch, September 7. A large crowd journeyed to the Show Grounds to witness tlio first contest for the Thaokcr Shield; between tho N'ort-h Shoro and tlio Sydenham Chilis. Tho gamo was certainly n good one, antl always interesting. Tito pace was rapid throughput, tho ball travelling up and down tho field inoossantly, and

tho fielding by both sides was good, wliilo tho tackling was ono of tho features of a hard grim contest. Sydenham fully deserved their victory, for tiiev played strongly throughout. North Shoro led at tho interval by 8 points to nil, but thoy had by no means the best of matters. In the second spell tho winners played brilliantly, and, although tho northerners wore frequently dangerous, Sydenham always wore a sliado stronger, the work of tho team back and forward being of the solid order. Tho visitors excelled in running nnd handling, but tho dash of tho winners moro than compensated for this. North Shoro commanded tho ball in tho scrums during tho first spell, but, in tho second half, Sydenham heeled out with success, and their backs brought off somo nico passing.
