WESTMEATH LEFT DURBAN. Cable advice has been received by tho Jocal nccntfl for tho F. and S. Lino statins that the steamer Westmeath left Durban for Hobart, Auckland, and Wellington on Thursday, July 24. Tho vessel, which is en route from Liverpool, is due at Wellington about September 1. ARRIVAL OF THE HAVRE. BURNING OIL FUEL. An Interesting arrival at Wellington from Sumatra, vfa Duncdin and Lyttelton. on Saturday was the British Imperial Oil Company's chartered steamer Havre.- Tho vessel was berthed at the Glasgow Wharf at 1.55 p.m. During the past few years Wellington liao been visited by a number of steamers with their engine-rooms placed aft, and tho llavro is one of them. She differs from predecessors, however, in that sho Is the first cargo steamer to visit this port burning oil fuel, and, consequently. Mot® intero3ted in 11M propnMan of steamers took the opportunities to visit her and mako inquiries. As the-vessel lay alongside tho wliarf the visitor was immediately impressed with the spioft apd span appearance of her decks. There are in all four hatches, which aro surrounded with hitch combings, with gas-tight steel covers, the latter being unscrewed in order to discharge tho cargo. Each hatch has a pair of steam winches, with up-to-date gear. Throughout tho day little jets of steam can be seen issuing from email nozzles abovo each hatch, and these ingenious contrivances arc rendered noocssary In order to remove tho vapour from tho cargo of benzino which is stowed below .

One of tho most interesting features of the Havre Is her eneino and boiler-rooms, which cro stationed in the after quarters. Everything is very compact and spotlessly clean. It is' the boiler-room that attracts tile visitors. Forward of tho engines there aro two large boilers, steam being raised by the use of crudo oil. When launched in 1906 tho Havre burned coal fuel, but about fifteen months ago her owners decided to substitute it for orudo oil,- and the experiment lias 1 been an unaualifiea success. By means of a powerful pump tho oil is forced through vary fine .lets into a combustion chamber, where it is mixed with air hoatcd to about lOOdcg., eventually being forced into tho furnaces hy means of Hawden's patent force draught, and little difficulty is experienced in maintainins a high pressnme of steam with a minimum amount of attention. Up to about tbrco months ago tho Jlavre was tho onlv v&ssol of her class alloat burning oil fuel, and It is understood that her success will result in several other vessels of the company's fleet being equipped. Besides beine economical, as compared with coal, the vessel is obliged to carry only sir firemen, three greasers, and three trimmers, tho last-named being Chinamen. In conversation with ft reporter, Captain Davies said that the vessel is equipped to enable coal to be usod if necessary, and tho tlmo occupied iri transferring tho furnaces would not occupy more than an hour. The Havre will complete discharge of her cargo of benzine to-day. and will then proceed to Napier. From the latter port she will go to Sydney and discharge a quantity of surplus bunker fuel, proceeding later on her return trip to Singapore. Captain D. 0. Davies ha,3 the following officers associated with hi'm;—Mr. R. H. Cairns (chief), Ur Q, W. Ferris (second), and Mr. R. 3. Daniel (thiru). The cneiueroom department is under tho control of Mr. B. T. Ryland, his assistants being Mr. C. H. Harvey (second), Mr. E. Ward (third), and Mr. H. G. Gunton (fourth), She carries a Chinese crew.

WIRELESS FROM THE MA RAMA. A wiroless message received last night from tho Union Company's steamer Marama states that the vessel expects to Auckland at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning. FOR GERMAN WARSHIPS. Auckland, July 26. Tlie Norwegian etoamcr Ervikcn, which arrived to-day from Admiralty Island, is to * load a cargo of coal for tho German ivard'nips at Samoa. BATTLE WITH THE WAVES. Tho Tyser Line steamer Star of Australia, which is due here on July 31 from Now York, encountered weather of an exceptionally rough character between Cane Town and Melbourne, and had what was described by her ofjiccm as tho most exciting experience In her career. Loaving New York on May 9, tho Star of Australia had a pleasant and uneventful run to Cape Town. After replenishing her coal bunkers tliero she resumed her voyage to Melbourne on Juno 7. The wea-, ther for the first three days was nothing out of tho ordinary, and Captain Ulyatt and his officers wcro hopeful that a smart rfin would be made to Port Phillip Heads. Their hopes were snuodily shattered. Tho conditions underwent a remarkable change on Juno 11. The wind freshened into a gale, and raged with great fury from tho south-west. The seas rose in sympathy. Before those on the steamer had time to properly realise the altered conditions tho Star of Australia was being buffeted about in an alarming manner. Although a largo vessel of 6179 tons register, and loaded with about 10,000 tonß of cargo, tho steamer was thrown about like a cork. Hugo seas Hooded her decks and carried away anything that was not securely la&licd. For hours the Star of Australia battled with the elements, without, however, making any appreciable headway. Captain Uyi.att realised that it would be only wasting coal to continuo the unequal struggle, so he turned tho vessel's head and ran before tho storm. This was done for nearly 72 hours, during which time tho gale ragod nii fiercely as ever. Eventually the conditions moderated somewhat, and Captain Ulyatt shaped his course for Melbourne. Until the steamer was within SGO miles of the Victorian coast the weather continued unfavourable. The !-tar of Australia outwardly presented nistorm-staincd appearance, but otherwise she looked none the worse for her rouch voyage. Some deck fitting'.! wero smashed by tho sc-as which came on board, and a considerable amount of unimportant damage was done by tho gale. The Star of Australia's actual steaming time from New York to Melbourne was 52 days 2 hours 45 minutes, which, in tho circumstances, is a creditable performance. The run from Can? Town to Melbourne occupied four days lunger than usual. As tfeg 6VBJ.. Australia jvaa .tavrlos .tact
