THE COUNTIES' CONFERENCE.

SOME OF THE REMITS. •The New Zealand Counties'. Association's ninth conference has been fixed to toko place at St. Paul's Schoolroom, Sydney Streot, on Tuesday, August 19, under tlie presidency of Mr. A. E. J nil. It Is anticipated that every County Council in tho Dominion will be represented. The following are some of the remits which have been hj; county councils in the vicinity of Wellington:— Hangitikei County Council.—"That all stock auctioneers' license fees bo made payable to the county councils." "That powers be given to the councils of I a borough and a county whoso boundaries are contiguous to amend such boundaries by mutual consent in tho same manner that tho councils of two adjacent counties are empowered to amend •their county boundaries." "That payment of travelling expenses of county councillors bo allowed whenever travelling, by direction of t|ie council, on the council's business." Eltham County Council.—"That all loan money accounts be kept in the Post Office Savings Bank." "That eouuties lw empowered to create an insurance schcino cither solely or jointly." • Akitio County Council.—"That the Government bo asked to control and maintain all main arterial roads." Horowhemm County Council.—"That for the purpose of representation on hospital and harbour boards and all othor governing bodies where practicable, counties, boroughs, and town districts shall have separate representation. And where such representation is- not practicablo and united representation is necessary the franchise possessed by a borougli or town district shall be tfes same as that exercised by a county." "That power be conferred upon local bodies that in Iho event of any county, with tho consent of tho two hospital boards interested, desiring a portion or the whole of a county to be transferred from one hospital district to another, such change may be carried out without special legislation." Manawatu County Council.—"That the attention of tho Oovernmont, be called to the shocking, waste of human life caused through accidents at level railway crossing?, and to respectfully pray that immediate action be taken to reduce tlieso casualties by minimising the existing, risks, whichy to a very great extent, aro reducible by tho removal of obstructions to the view at, and near, level crossings. "As a further means to this end it is respectfully _ suggested that_ competitive designs bo invited for « signalling or blocking apparatus, ivith a further and much more substantial bonus for any device proving an efficient, enduring, and economical safeguard."'
