— » ;■ Efforts made by the Borough' Council to obtain control of the scenic reserve at Makirikiri have been successful, advico having been received from the" Prime Minister that it will be vested in the council as a domain very shortly. A meeting of officers and N.C.O.'s of the local Territorial, Mounted, and Cadet Companies, was held on Friday evening to go into the matter of holding amilitary tonrnament in Dannevirke in September., Captain J. C. Davidson occupied the „chair. Lieutenant A. J. Webber and. Q.-M.-S. T. Grant were elects! secretary and treasurer respectively. The general committee elected comprised all officers and N.C.O.'s connected with local companies, while Captain J. Armstrong, Sergt.-Major J. H. Fairhurst, Captain Davidson, Colour-Sergeant Greenwood and Lieutenants Ongley, Moir, and Vartiham wero appointed a programme committee. ' A canvassing committee was elected as; follows: Lieutenants A. J. Webber, S. Mackay. an«l It. V. M'Dowell. The programme will include tug-of-war, physical and squad drill, rifle exercise, tent pitching, signalling, bugling, wrestling on horseback, tug-of-war on horseback, sectional jumping, lemon cutting, running, and other horse events. Application was made to the Borough Council for the use of the Domain on September 17. This was granted, and the sports will be held on that date. Rule, inn., will take up their residenco at Ballance. * A social and danco was hold in tho Raumati Schoolhouse on Friday evening, when settlers and friends of Mr.' and Mrs. Claridge assembled to bid them farowell on the evo of. their departure from the settlement. During the evening Mr. Massie presented the guests-with a set of carvers and an afternoon tea set. Songs wero sung by Miss John and Mr. Little. The music for the dancing was in tho hands of Miss Hart, Messrs. Little, Brannighan,- and Walker. . Mr. J. Goggin acted as M.C.
