THREE-FIFTHS MAJORITY. DEPUTATION TO MR. RUSSELL, M.P. Christchurch, June 15. On Saturday afternoon, Mr. G. W. Russell, M.P., received a deputation of twenty people, who wished to enlist his support (as member for Avon) in abolishing the three-fifths majority on tho liquor question. The deputation was introduced by Miss Roberts, who put forward several arguments in favour of abolishing tho threefifths majority. She said that tho Democratic League, which was being formed, ■had pledged itself to vote for no one but bare majority candidates for Parliament. Mr. Russell 6tated in reply that he was pledged to the electors of Avon to uphold tho three-fifths' majority, and ho could not break his pledge. FRACTIOUS HORSE. MEN HURT IN SALETARD. Auckland, June U. At Buckland and Sons' saleyards yesterday, tho. racehorse Luperin, when being exercised for the bonefit of buyers, became fractious, and knocked down 6ix men, three of whom wero more or less seriously injured. The animal struck William Patterson, an elderly man, with its fore feet and throw him on tho ground, where he was trampled upon. John Delaney and J. Winters were also badly hurt. Tho two latter were removed to the hospital. It is feared' Patterson has been injured internally. Delaney's injuries are not serious. i LAND COMPANY TO BE WOUND UP. Auckland, June 15. Sitting in Chambers yesterday, Mr. Jus- | tice Cooper considered an application by R. L. Ziman on behalf of one of the creditors (Mr. Buchanan, of Christchurch) in the estate of the Belmont Land Company, Ltd. His Honour remarked that the company was in a. parlous condition, and the mortgagee was entitled to exercise his power of sale within d few days. The company had had plenty of time to arrange its finance, but had been unable to do so, and, regarded from the most favourable point of view, it was insolvent. In the circumstances, seeing the majority of the creditors (in value) desired a winding up, the Court ought to order that the estate be wound up. When the matter had been submitted to the' creditors it had been shown that creditors to the extent of .£876 were against the windingup, and creditors to the extent of .£923 were in favour of it. The sooner the Official Assignee had charge of the estate the better. The assignee would ex officio become the . solo liquidator of the estate. An order was made accordingly.

• MOTOR-CAR TAKES FIRE. Dunedin, June 15. Some excitement was caused in Stafford Street last night, when a motor-car travelling up-hill took fire. It is surmised that the jolting caused the petrol to come into contact with the fire in .some way, but exactly how the mishap occurred is not clear. Fortunately tho car was clear of buildings. Little could bo done to save the car, which was very extensively damaged. It was the property of Mr.'Fitzgerald, of Dunedin.

The Chief Judge of the Native Land Court delivered judgment at Wairoa on Saturday, upholding the judgment of the Nativo Land Court in tne Wharekahika Block, with slight variations agreed to oy the' parties. i The residents of Mangapapa, who recently decided to form a borough, now find that the population is fifty short of the required number, and have consequently decided to form a Town Board. ■
