DOMESTIC HELP PROBLEM.

The "Labour Journal" states that for the past month in 'Auckland there have been received at the Labour Bureau 223 applications—ls7 from employers and 05 from employees. Of engagements made, thero wero 51, and 13 immigrants were suitably placed. The scarcity of workers has not been so acute during tho past month as formerly. This, no doubt, is owing to more immigrants coming to Auckland, and to tho close of the tourist season throughout the thermal districts, when the hotel staffs are considerably reduced during the winter months, and these flock into the city for employment. In Wellington, during the past month, 243 applications were received, 164 from employers and 79 from employees.' Of these "3 engagements v were mado, Thero was also many inquiries from factory occupiers for hands. Domestio workers aro still in great demand; many employers would be satisfied if they could secure tho services of young girls to assist scncrnlly. In such cases neither cooking nor washing would be required of fhem, and the wages offered range from 109. to 15s. per week. All applicants, however, appear to prefer factory work. During tho month the following applications liavo been received in Dunedin: —From employers requiring assistants, 79; and from assistants seeking work, 28, of whom 25 have been placed in suitable employment. The demand for generals is still very keen. In Christchurcli 132 applications werp received during the month from employers and a total of 23 Applications from employees. Many splendid positions are offering in the country, but girls cannot bo persuaded to leave tho city, especially during the winter months.
