Tho three Ministers attended a citizens' ball to the New Zealand officers last night, at which 800 guests were present. HAMILTON'S NEW SCHEME, Hamilton, May 17. The Hamilton Borough Council last night approved the Mayor's scliemo for municipal dwellings. This provides for buildings to be erected by the council on borough and domain endowments on Glasgow leases, giving the occupiers the option of becoming the owner of all improvements. The endowments of tho borough and the domain total about 250 acres, which can be dealt with. , BARMAID FINED. Wanganui, May 17. . Tho Magistrate (Mr. Kerr) gavo his decision this morning in a case in which a barmaid at Foster's Hotel was charged with supplying liquor to an intoxicated person. Ho convicted her and fined her i£s, with costs (£7) and solicitor's fee (£3 35.). A charge against the landlord of permitting drunkenness was adjourned till Monday.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, ( Oamaru, May 18. An elderly woman named Mrs. Emily Dickson made an attempt to commit suicide on Saturday, by jumping into deep water in the lagoon. Sho was rescued by a man named Donne, and later had to bo sent to tho hospital. . A DESERTER FROM H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND. Auckland, May 18. A man named Bertie Parker, aged 33, was arrested on Friday night on a charge of helping a,seaman named Davis to desert from H.M.S. New Zealand. Parker was brought before the Police Court yesterday on that charge, and on another of stealing a naval uniform belonging to the British Government. Tlio case was remanded to next Friday. EDIEVALE RAILWAY EXTENSION. Invercargill, May 18. At a special meeting of tlio Chamber of Commerce, a deputation was received from the' settlers of Moa Flat district asking for tho co-operation of local business men in securing an extension of the Edievalo railway for two miles at least.; The deputation represented that owing to tho lack of this extension they were compelled to cart their grain over a steep hill, and owing to tho expense and'difficulties they were being obliged to turn their attention from agriculture to pastoral pursuits. Tho meeting resolved to givo tho settlers all possible help to secure tho extension desired.
