LIFE SAVED AT LYALL BAY.
Taking advantage of the glorious weather yesterday, many hundreds jof people visited the seaside resorts, more 'particularly Lyall Bay. The local swim* mers wore honoured by a _ visit of a lifesaving team from the Eichmond _ Swimming Club, Christchurch, and as it happened their services were really required. The team is. hero ,to givo exhibitions with a patent life-saving appliance, which they hold is a very serviceable invention, and tho personnel of the combination comprises A. E.. Sommerfield (captain), A. Osborne (vico-captain), G. Osborne, J. B. Adams (inventor), H. Yardley, E. Velvin, and W. Lees. The invention is an; .airtight torpedo-shaped canvas bag, which weighs a little more than an ordinarylifebelt. It has threo rather largo grips on each side. Whilst carrying out several tests, the visitors wero required to go into real • "action."- Tho alarm was given that a man was in diffculties, somo little distance out from the beach. Members of the team secured their man promptly, and , ten, minutes after his rescue ho was none, the' worso 'for his narrow escape. The visitors are to givo an exhibition at the Bay to-day. i
