BIG INFLUX TO CITY. The suggestion that Wellington should have its Carnival Week the same as Christchurch, in November, and Auckland at Christmas, found immediate favour. The. result was evidont in tho city on Thursday afternoon and evening, when the main streets were thickly populated by large crowds ql people, many of whom 'could be detected as visitors by those having an ,everyday acquaintance with "the face 3in the street." The trams wero unusually crowded. At the Lambton Station, the "Bank" cornor, and Courtenay; Place stopping places, tram-trippers piled up thick'lato in the afterneon and during' the evening, and some rushes for seats in'already crowded cars were • witnessed between 5 p.m. and 7-p.m. Tho Maori brought 700 passengers to Wellington yesterday, and the ' Mokoia 300, from Lyttelton, whilst tho Pateena, Mararoa, and Araliura from Picton brought a large number of Nelson and Marlborough visitors. Tho railways also brought many to town on Thursday and yesterday. , .It is pleasing to record that tho weather so fat has b'ian : was'as perfect a summer's day as ono could wish. An almost cloudless sky, genial sunshine, and tho lightest of southerly freezes (which died down alt9gether in tho afternoon) gave magnificent holiday conditions, and as the result' tho bays, gardens, and reserves were well peopled throughout the day, and all appeared to bo pleasantly affected with tlio holiday spirit. If such perfect weather prevails to-day, ' tho, rowing' fraternity will be indeed fortunate, and the many who are interesting themselves in the Citizens' Carnival will have cause for satisfaction. .

The Government Meteorologist (Mr. D. C.' Bates) is delightfully non-committal on the point. With subtle meteorological diplomacy he reported on Thursday "There is a cloud or two on the horizon, and I am -watching developments. Tliero is a disturbance of considerable intensity to the north of New Zealand with which 1 am not in touch, but I know it is there. The balance, however, runs in favour of fair weather setting in." With such, weather as. was experienced yesterday, the publio may spiilo at the northern disturbance of "conr>iderabie intensity," and continue'to revel in the proper carival spirit.
