| MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. r Tho monthly meeting of the Victoria College Council was held lust evenin-', there being present: The chairman:(Mr. Clias. Wilson], Sir Robert Stout, tho Hon. A. L. Hcrdman, Dr. C..P. Knight, and Messrs A. T. Maginnity, T. K. Fleming, K. Mlsiab, A. R. Atkinson, 1?. M'Calluin, MP YF. Ferguson, H, H. Ostler, mid C Watson. The statement of finances, adopted, disclosed a. credit balance of ,£BU 19s. 3d. ■ The following: 'appointments to professorial assistrintships were made, on the recommendation of the professors concern--ed ' ' 'Assistant demonstrator,.'physics'laboratory (Professor Laby)—Mr. W. A; Stewart. M.Sc;-' - ■' Assistant, law classes (Professor Garrow)—Mr. G. G. Ct. "Watson. ' Assistant, mental science classes (Professor Hunter)— Miss L. E. Levi. \ On tho recommendation of tlio Finance Committee it was agreed that the Defence Department should erect a small building, to be used as an orderly room by tho College Company of Territorials, jon fart-of the college grounds, the plan 'and' 1 elevation of the building, and its position, to be approved of by the Finance' Committee. 1

The chairman and librarian were authorised to price duplicate books in the college library, and to place these on .sale to professors and students, the money so realised to be placed to the credit of the library fund.. With regard to the proposal of the College Council to impose upon all students attending lectures a collego fee—apart, from the class fees—a letter was received from the Education Department, in reply to a request by the council for an opinion as tothe-legality or otherwise of such, a charge! The Department stated flfat the Act did not make the point clear, and gave no'direct opinion as/to whether such a charge could or could not be made. The council, after a brief'discussion, decided to-impose the fee next year, it being pointed out that such fees were already chatged in other university colleges.
