A very familiar figure in Wanganui— Mr. Joseph. Chodwick—passed away yesterday at tlie ago of '88. Deoeased, who was one of tho pioneers of tho district, had spent half a century in New 1 Zealand audi. 48 years . in, Wanganui. Ho was a native of Ixmdon, went to sea, and as,a young -man' had many exciting adventures in tho suppression, of. tho slave trade. Ho emigrated to Australia 1n,.1851, and ten years later, oamo to New Zealand. He spent two years on the Otago goldfields and then came to Wanganui, where ho established himself as an auctioneer, jetiring from business about twelve years ago. Ho served in the Wanganui cavalry during the campaign against Titokowaro, and received the Maori war medal. He was ten years a borough councillor and for many years trustee of the Wanganui raceoourse, and a prominent member of the Masonic Order. He is survived by three danghters and two eons—Mrs. E. N. Liffiton (Wangamij), Mrs. Butley (Wellington), Mrs. R. W. Falkner (Wanganui), Messrs. Joseph Chadwiok (Auokland), and Harry Chadwick (Hawera).
