HIGHWAY- ROBBERY BY TAXI BANDITS.

DIAMOND MERCHANT HELD UP V A taxi-cab has again been utilised/in a' London crime; Five'-men, two armed 'with knives, committed daring high-, way. robbery in Hackney by its aid. The victim was Mr. Meyer Goldborg, a Hnttott Garden diamond merchant, who was on his way home to Victoria Street, Hackney, when the men:.'leaped from behind a taxi-cab, attempted to garotte him, and escaped with loose, diamonds valued at about *EIOOO, 'which ho was carrying in his wallet. After Mr. Goldberg had been. 6eized and robbed themien jumped into tho taxicab, but the robbed, man sprang on'the footboard;.: Tho driver had no suspicion Until then that his "fares".' were' thieves. Tho thieves left the cab and : disappear- , cd, but the driver was asked to go to Wick Road Police Station, where ho was able to give a description of thrco of the men. • ■ ■ "....■■ : ■' ■ All were apparently between thirty, and thirty-five years of age, and one, who was.wearing a block overcoat and bofrlef hat, was about sft. Bin. in height. Another, slightly taller,' had no overcoat, but wore a bowler hat,- and had a heavy, fair moustache'. Tho third' ono was ■ shorter than th 6 other two, and was dark ' and clean-shaven. ' , Mr; Goldberg, who is a' middle-aged,: sturdily-built man, has given the follow-:' ' ing account of tho robbery:— .•;••' fi l left my office in Charles Street, Hat- ' ton Garden, soon after five o'clock, I in- ' tended to go homo to dress, and catch tho 8 p.m. train for Antwerp, where I was going on a business visit. I went from Farringdon Street Station to Aldgato with a friend, a diamond merchant,: and ho camo on.with mo to the corner of. Mare Street. Near my homo in Victoria Street, about twelve doors away, a taxicab was standing.' I took little notice of it, but as I was passing I was seized from behind. A man passed his hand : across mr back, and a pair of hands gripped my throat. Two men then dragged open my cont mid waistcoat, and forced away my wallet, which was attached to my waist by a chain. In getting it they tore away the buttons and split tho side of my waistcoat. The men—there were five at least, and two had knives—then jumped into the taxi-cab, but I shouted for help, and sprang on the footboard.
