REV.FATHER COSTELLO

THE FUNERAL. The funeral of the late Father Costello took place at Palmerston yesterday afternoon. Mass was cjlebrated at regular intervals from six till eleven o'clock, and at the latter hour the solemn Requiem Mass was sung. Archdeacon Devoy, of Wellington, was the celebrant; Dean Power, of Hawera, was the deacon, and father Cahill,. of Dannevirke, sub-deaeon. A largo number of visiting priests -were present, and chanted the dirges. Deaii O'Shea, Vicar-General, preached an eloquent panegyric at the church. The priests present were the lollowing:— Very Kev. Buick, M.P., Mrs, Buick, Captaiii Trask (representing the Defence Department), and Mr. R. M'Nab. As tho members of various orders marched out from tho side' entrance to the church tho Dead March ("Saul") was played by the orchestra conducted by Mr. Salvatoro Ciuiiao, and then the casket was borne from the church through tho main gate, .tho bearers being Messrs. J. Hurley, Phelan, J. Lynch, J. Redwood, Kavanagli, and C. M'Urath. The marshals oi the procession were the Kev. Father Doulagnty, Mr.' W. Devine, and Mr. J. Gleesoii (assistant marshal). The religious societies formed a noticeable part of the procession—the collars of the Hibernians, the crimson insignia of the Sacred Heart, the regalia of St. Vincent dc Paul, and the veils of the.. Children of Mary were very noticeable. . The order of the cortege with the deputy-marshal was as follows:—Crossbearer and acolytes; Thuriter and holy water; Hibernians (Bro. T. O'Reilly); i-acred Heart, men (Mr. T. Power); cadets (Staff-Sergeant K Butler and Lieutenant M'.Copcland); school boys (Mr. W.' Brophy); Children of Mary (Miss Scanlon); Sacred Heart, women (Mrs. Hickey); school girls (Mr. H. R. Wcon); St. Vincent de Paul, men (Mr. F. Oakley) ; hearse; clergy; parishioners and general public. Tho procession left St. Patrick's about noon, and proceeded along Broad Street to the Square, thence to the post office, turning into Main Street, and proceeding to the cemetery. The length of the column was about half a mile, and included a great many vehicles. On both sides of the hearse there walked a committee, composed of the' following, who afterwards acted as bearers to the grave:— Dr. O'Brien, Messrs. Broad, Loughnan, Kennedy, Hickey, Hanlou, Hodgins, aad Oakley. Tho late Father Costello was interred at tho foot of the largo cross erected years ago by. Father Patterson. Tho final rites were /conducted by Dean O'Shea.
