Bjundreds of people assembled on the Railway Wharf yesterday to see the Union Co.'s training ship Dartford berth. It was a picturesque sight, but it was somewhat of a sad one also, for it is the intention of the sailer's owners, to dismantle her, and convert this fine full-rigged ship into a coal hulk. The 39 boys in training looked what they are intended to be, as, clad in white, tl'.ey assisted in bringing the vessel alongside. The Dartford commenced her final voyage in a manner not, likclv to be forgotten by »ea.fc.riiiK folk at Newcastle. NewSouth Wales. At 6.45 a.m. on Sunday, November 10, the training ship left the coal port for Wellington, oncl sailed straight out to sea from the wharf. Tho German training ships do tlli-3 regularly, but the Dartford is credited with bcini t'je first British shin to have accomplished this feat ■ for many years. On Mondav the work of dismantling the Dartford will bo commenced, and this will occupy about two or throe weeks. Thfe 39 boys on bom-d will assist in l.lie work, and will remain on board, until it is completed. . When In Wellington Sir .Tanrea Mills, managing director for the Union Comnanv, was asked what was to be donewith the nnnrenticcs who had not completed their time. Sir James renlled thnt. that matter was being considered. It- is understood. however, that tho bpys will be drafted on to some of the larger and newer oteamers belonging to the company. The Sydney "Sun" contains information of a sensational shipping disaster in the Bay of Biscay. During a fos tile steamer Camdale, whose engines had broken down, was struck amidships by the steamer Counsellor. The collision was followed by an explosion on the Camdale that blew the ship lip as a charge of gunpowder might have dope. The officers and crew managed to get away in the ship's boats, but those who were below at the limo escaped in only their night-clothes. The Camdale. which was formerly known as the Penelope, was a steel screw steamer of 2746 tons. She was built in 1895, ooid was owned by the Merevale Shipping Company. The Counsellor, which belongs to the Charento S.S. Company, Ltd., is a vessel of 4959 toils. AEAWA LEAVES IIONTE VIDEO. Twenty-four shipping masters recently petitioned tl)e Westport Harbour Board to shift tho harbourmaster's office to a more suitable position, closer to shipping, tho bulk of which was carried, on at the crane wharf, .or if that was not practicable, to have an assistant harbourmaster's office close to shipping, so that they would be in close touch with him at night; failing compliance with either of these suggestions, that a telephone connection be arranged so that shipmates could get in direct touch with the night signalman. Tho petition vras referred to harbourmaster for recommendation. ' It is reported that the barnuontine Titania, which landed a oargo of Oregon pine at Dunedin a few week's ago, has been purchased by Captain Holm, late owner of the barque Helen Denny, subject to inspection at Sydney.
