J. >orrh, of Wellington, delivered an illustrated lecture in the loinrllaH to-night on the subject of "Tl<o British in India." The proceeds of the lecture wero in aid of tbe funds of the Masterton Baptist Church. ~M r - J- p. Cooper, managing director of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Companv, returned -to Masterton yesterday from 'a visit to the south. He states that the season in Canterbury, has been vctv wet, and farming operations are delayed" The settlers of the Matahiw'i district have been notified that" a postal delivery will be initiated <it an early date. The Buller • hockey representatives will meet the "Wairarapa representatives ou September 12 in a contest for tho Xcrdon Cup. The Mayor was last night appointed a delegate of tho Borough Council, to attend a conference convened by the Akitio Count}- Council, to consider the advisability of establishing au accident fund for the insuranco of local body employees in tho Wairarapa hospital district. The coal shortage, which has.been experienced for- some time, no longer exists. It was reported to the Borough Council last evening that there was now no difficulty in procuring supplies for the municipal gasworks. Tho Audit Department has informed the Masterton'Borough Council that it has no legal authority to sell coal. The council intends" taking the advice'of its solicitor on the subject.. A' conference of .local bodies is to be held here on Wednesday next, to consider the matter of the establishment of a high school, to - provide, courses'of professional, commercial, and, rural 'training, and also the question of consolidating the present system of mral training obtaining at the various schools throughout' the district, on the" lines adopted in Marton.
