HASTINGS SCHOOL.
A DEPUTATION'S BEQUESTS. A deputation representing.the ITawkp's Bay Education Board and the Hastings School Committee waited upon the Minister for' Education (the Hon. James Allen) yesterday, The meuibers of it. ivera Mr. W. Morgan, of tho Hawke's Bay Education Boari(, and Mr. Q. Land, o£ tho Hastings School Committee, and'they were introduced by Mr; 11. M. Campbell, M.P. What they in effect, was that the Department should purchase one acre of laud adjacent to the Hastings 6chool ground, to its used for practical instruction ill agriculture. The . cost of the ground iva's to he \£soo, which tho deputation -urged was a reasonable .value, and the committee were willing; to find 41100. The Department had, however, refused to contribute anything, aiid the deputation inado application to the Minister.' It was represented that Hastings was the centre of a- big agricultural district, and that the listings' School was t)io only one at which, land could be procured for practical instruction in agriculture.. The Minister said he had not had tho matter before him definitely enough to give V definito answer, but |io would consider request carefully! Tho same deputation asked the Minister, tq sanction tho purchase of a site at" Mahora South for o. school to relieve the congestion iii tlie Hastings School. The site suggested \yas 4j acres' in area, and tho cost was .£1056: The Department, had offered . ,£850.'; The' Iffiiistei' replied that the latter amount was tlio valuation put 11 poir tho property by the Departmental officer, and .lie could not go beyond it. Ho would still authorise a grant of J2850, and suggested that tjio board shqnld pay the'rest. ' ' ■ "
