Play did not begin until 3.30 o'clock. Carkeek, M'Laren,' Jennings, and Minnott, were omitted from tho Australian side. Boot replaced "Warren ia tie county eleven. Gregory won tho tos3, and batted on a soft wicket. There were 500 present. The weather was cloudy. Early it was seen that the pa'Ce of the pitch was uncertain. Mayne and Kelleway faced tho bowling of Forester and Cadman. The Australians started badly, for before a run was made Mayne was run out. Slater throwing down the wicket from short-leg. Mayue just failed to got home in time.
Macartney did not score, being bowled in playing back to Forester. Bardsley and Kelleway raised the score to 25 after fifty-five minutes' play. /
Rain delayed play for half an hour. On resuming, the batsmen added 5 runs, when'Cadman got Bardsley l.b.w. Greg: ory, who succeeded, hit a four off Forester—the first of the match—and was bowled next ball. Kelleway and Matthews played out time. Details are as follow:— AUSTRALIA.—First Innings.
