(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston N., April 23. The Manawatu Golf Club will officially open tho season next Saturday at the liokowhitu links. Mr. W. Thomson, who was a candidate for tho Pnlinerston seat at the last general election, gave an address in tho Municipal Hall last night, Mr. S. T. Hunt in tho chair. Mr. Thomson dealt principally with compulsory military training, which ho is very_ much against. He also dealt with the licensing laws, and asked if the Hon. Mr. Myers would pay the samo attention in seeing that tho law was carried out in respect to "tied" houses as lie had promised to give ill respect to (110 compulsory clauses of tho Defence Act. Mr. Hiomson anticipates there will bo another general election two months after Parliament meets, and proposes to givo further addresses.

Tho Native reserves in the borough, recently cut up by tho Public Trustee, liavo been readily taken up. A number of (ho sections liavo been sccured by several scholastic institutions, to provido recreation grounds for the pupils. At tho annual meeting of tho Campbell Street School committee last night it was reported that tho cash balance in hand was ,£2O, as compared with .£3 lis. lfld. last year. The average roll number for tho year was 732, and tho average attendmice GGI. Mention was made of the proposal to construct swimming baths at tho school, and it was decided fo 'tako steps at onco to promoto tho movement. At 1.110 meeting of tho College Street School Committee the report stated that tho school had advanced a grade during tho year, and it was now staffed for -150 pupils. The acquirement of a little over two acres of land alongside the school would make the playground adequate formally years. Tho Terrace End School has also had a most successful year, and there had been a largo increaso in tho number of children attending th'o' sdhool. Tho usual meeting of Court Manawatu Foresters was held last night, Bro. A. r.ovv, C.R., in tho chair. Ono new member was initiated, and another proposed. Tho quarterly balance-sheet showed tho funds to bo in a most satisfactory state.

HUNT CLUB'S OPENING. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, April 23. At the Wanganui Education Board election in July next, Mr. G. H. Bennett, who represents the southern end of tlio education district, purposes to offer himself for re-election. It is understood that Mr. W. Thomson will also bo a candidate for tho seat. Tlio hunting season was opened this afternoon by tho Manawatu Hunt Club with a "meet" at Fitzherbert East, and, notwithstanding the weather, there was a good field. Owing to the rain, (hero was somo delay in starting, and whilo waiting for a break in the weather, afternoon tea was dispensed at tho residence of (ho president (Mr. S. B. Lancaster). Tlio hounds had been kept together during tho off season, and (hoy camo out to-day in pood condition, and under tho
