CARTERTON ITEMS.
Mr. H. MThee's threshing plant has | just put thvongh an excellent crop ot oats on Mr. Colin Campbell's property at Clareville. In Hay last five acres were put down in Tuscan wheat, and eaten oil by owes and lambs in Ausrust. Iho crop has just been threshed, and has yielded 50 bushels to tho acro-in all 8 tons llcwt. Tho wheat has been sold at 4s. per bushel, and the straw at 355. a ton, giving a return at about JEI3 an acre. It is compulsory-not optional-for farmers to keep their lands clear of noxious weeds. At a recent sitting of tho Magistrate's Court, at Mnrtinborongh, a farmer at Pirinoa (Jas. M'Dougall) was charged by Mr. S. C. Irons, Inspector of Noxious Weeds, with failing to clear his boundaries and lands of gorse. 1)1!fendant pleaded guilty. In evidence the inspector stated that every consideration had been shown the defendant, and that he had done his best to induce tho owner to clear his land without prosecuting, but no notice had been taken. He asked that a substantial fine be imposed. His Worship agreed that every leniency had been shown by tho Department, and pointed out that men could have I>cen_ put on bv the inspector, and the work nonet at defendant's cost had the Department chosen to do so. A fine of 10s. and costs was imposed, with a warning that, on Ins next appearance in Court on a similar charge, the maximum penalty would bo made. ... The old-fashioned method ot reaping bv means of the billhook has apparently not gons out of vogue yet. A few days ago a farmer of the Carterton district reaped an acre of oats by this method, and claims to have gained 30s. in straw over the machine method. The South Wairaraoa Poultry, Pigeon, and Cage Bird Association have aprrticd for Julv 17 and 18 for their annnal show. The association has not entertained the proposal of tho Hastings Socictv to procure a judge from Australia. This decision is on the score of tho expense which would bo entailed.
