HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

':: An ORhnar/imeehng of the Hutt Borough Council was held last evening and .jvafj attended by the Mayor .(Mr. E P Bunny) and Councillors ' Hobbs, Ball! Stevenson, Hoots, C. Clendon, Hodgius, and knight. Councillor Roots was appointed thc\coujicils representative on tho Petone Technical School Board. Messrs. Baker Bros, asked for permission to dedicate a strip of land to extend Eata Street across for about a chain and a half, beyond the stop bank, in order to give legal means of access to a new sub-division into two blocks of land—Deferred to the engineer for report. In reference to changing the name of Alicetowii to "Southern Hutt" the municipal solicitor wrote suggesting that the council should pass a resolution that tho change of name be made, and also prepare a petition for such change, and that; tho petition be sealed by the corporation and bo circulated for signature by hor.seholders in the district atl'eetod, and that n. certified copy of the resolution be sent vo tho Minister for Internal Affairs. If thought fit a public meeting of householders might also bo held. Councillor Hoots hoped that the council would agree to this, lie would be agreeable to make a house-to-house canvass, and therefore do nway with a public meeting. He would move the required resolution. Tho Mayor stated that he would not like to pass a resolution unless the Alicetown people were in favour of it. The name did honour to a certain lady, but, if the people were willing, there was nothing against the change proposed. The resolution moved by Councillor Hoots was carried. The local W.C.T.U. were granted a public hall license. Licenses were also granted to the Weslevau Church and schoolroom, Knos Church, and St. .lame.s's Church nnd schoolroom, provided that the necessary alterations were carried out to the approval of the borough engineer. Mr. Gardner was instructed to proceed to Auckland, to inspect the supply of drain pipos for the Ixirough. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee several accounts were struck off, and gas deposits forfeited. It was resolved to ask Mr. Clout to remove his fence oft' the road within fourteen days. Failing this, proceedings will bo taken. : The engineer was instructed lo proceed with the completion of the Waiwetu Bridge. It was decided to add ten per cent to the amount of all rales unpaid within six months and one fortnight of the first demand. On the motion of the Mayor it wa.s resolved to forward a letter of condolence, to Mrs. Fitzherbert in respect lo the death of her husband (Mr. 11. S. Fitzherbert). In a special report in reference to topping tho borough roads the engineer suggested the method of tarring and sanding, which could be done :it alxnit lid. per yard. There were about ,'lO miles of streets and footpaths and, approximately, the cost would be .CTOfIO, extending ovor :i period of 1"S years, or at the rale of i'lflO per annum. Councillor Clendon's action in endeavouring to bring about legislation for a universal Saturday hnll'-holidny w.ts unproved, and notice of motion was tabled accordingly.
