Of the 18 who stood and were defeated, 11 wero supporters of the Ward Government, one (.Mr.. J. Duncan) was nn Independent, and three were members of the Reform party. Of the sis members who <liil not seek re-election, one was a member of the Reform party, and five vrcro supporters of the Government. The Keform j>arty held Mr. Phillippe's peat, and won four of the five Government seats. The sixth seat was captured by an Independent (Jlr. Atinore). In the old House the M'ard Government commanded 51 vote as against 20 on the Opposition benches—a majority of 28, or more than two to one.
