The Maunganui, which was built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company, is said to be a magnificent vessel, and ranks ae the finest and fastest liner engaged' in the intercolonial service. On her trials the Maunganui developed a speed of a little over 18 knots, without undue pressure, and a. good 17 knots win bs got out of her if rcouired. The vessel's dimensions are:-Lcng'th. 430 ft.; breadth, 55ft. 6in.; depth, to promonad; deck, 42ft. 6in.. and gross tonnage abont 7000, about 1000 less than the Makura. In general arrangement and equipment the Maunganui is of the highest class. Ventilation has received careful attention, both naturally and by the tliermo-ventilnt.ing system with louvre to each room, which allows passengers to regulate the current of air. The propelling machinery consists of two sets of miodruple-expansioii balanced engines. Strain at a pressure of 2201b. is supplied by two double-ended and two singleended cylindrical boilers, adanted for Howden'* system of forced draught. The Maunganui is said tu have cost about £200.000 to build and sipiip. Captain L. Wurrall. formerly of the Marauiu ami Muana. Is in command.
