ALLEGED ILL-TREATMENT OF IMMIGRANTS. Much political excitement was caused in New Tork at. the ond of December by the publication of an official letter written by Governor Dix, of New- York. State, demanding tho immediate resignation as health officer of tho port of Now York of Dr. Alvah ll.' Doty. "Orderlies are permitted to carry in their arms the bodies of dead children, covered with sheets, from the hospital to the morgue. Whenever this occurs— the orderlies being obliged to pass throngh the open grounds—-mothers who have not seen their sick children in the hospital and do not know their condition follow the orderlies, hysterically weeping •and wailing and. trying to pull off. the sheets to ascertain whether or not tho bodies are those of their own children' Mr. Dix states that Dr. Doty has not made any attempt to disprove the charges of misconduct.' dishonesty, depravity, and immorality against his administration: therefore ho must resign immediately.
