_-■—«—. The police are proceeding against- a hotel licensee in this district on <i charge of employing a female not registered as a barmaid to serve out licensed drinks. The case will be heard before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M. Good was proceeded against for failing to take the oath of allegiance and for not fulfilling his obligation to attend drills, and Young for failing to attend. For the prosecution, Captain Hume, of Wanganui, gave evidence of the bad effect of the conduct of these Iwys on others who were attending the drills, and Serjeant Bowden (of Fcilding) explained that though the accused hail since decided to fulfil the law, and had attended drills, he would proceed with the case, by way of example for others. The magistrate severely reprimanded the youths on their lack of patriotism, and the evil of their conduct as it affected others. Good was convicted and fined £1, and Young was convicted and discharged.
