LOCOMOTIVE 98 FEET LONG.
Ono of the largest locomotives in the world has just been built for tho Pennsylvania Railroad. It will bo tried out in freight service 011 steep grades of the mountains in western Pennsylvania, and if it proves satisfactory, this type, known as the "il-11-L" may be adopted. The new engine (says the New York "Evening post") is longer than tho Pennsylvania's now all-stell coaches. From the point of tho pilot to the pulling face of the coupler on the rear of the tendor, the distance is 98 feet 3J inches. Tho weight of the engine in working order and the tender loaded is GGS.MOIb. This is 235,900ib. heavier than the class "K-2," the heaviest passenger engine, aud 272,GU01b. heavier than the class "H-S-b," tho heaviest freight engine which the Pennsylvania is now using. It is 014,275 lb. heavier than the "John Bull," the Pennsylvania's oldest locomotive. There arc four cylinders, each foavinp a diameter of 27 inches and a stroke of 28 inches. Each of (ho 1G driving wheels is 5G inches in diameter. The bteam pressure is IGOlb. and the total heating surface 7723.G square feet—3lo3.7 more than on tho "K-2." On the "John Bull," the heating surface was only 213 square feet. The inside dimensions of tho fire- box are 12 feet and 1-S inch by S feet and J inch. Tho tender will hold 9000 gallons of water, and 30,000 pounds of coal.
