Ihe report showed that there were over one hundred and fifty members, bem-; a record for the society. The balancc-shoet showed an amount to credit of .£1- IW!., with outstanding subscriptions £\'i. The action ot the Fire Board in deciding to purchase a motor fire engine was endorsed. Ihe Mayor reported that the report ot Mr. Black, electrical engineer, on tho question of the installation of trams had eome to hand, and as soon as copies had been prepared they would be distributed to councillors, and a special meeting called at an early date- to consider the report, which was' a verv lengthy and exhaustive ono. Councillor Armstrong intimated that a report would shortly be presented to tlio council on the question of purchasing the works from tho gas company. The en»ineer reported that the following permits had been issued during tho past month:—Now buildings, 11; additions, ■!; removals, 2. „ , , -i h At the Supremo Court yesterday, the Chief Justice made feeling reference, to tho death of the late Mr. H. S. Fitzberbert, who, he pointed out, was formerly Crown Prosecutor in Palmorston, and it was while holding that position that he was appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate. Sir Robert Stout said ho had known the late Mr. Fitzherbert since he was quite a lad, and the position he had attained was a most honourable one. H> felt sure tho Bar sympathised with the widow ami family, aiid there would bo deep regret that 'death had overtaken him so early in his career. The sentiments expreswd by the Chief Justice were endorsed by Mγ. C. A. Loughiian, Crown Prosecutor. At the Borough Council meeting last night also reference was made to the Into Mr. Fitzherberf, who formerly held the portion of Bornueh Solicitor. Tt was decided to send a letter of condolence to the widow and family. •U last ni'ht's meeting of the Borough Council' Councillor M'Carry, in reference to the slow progress being made with the raising of the dam at tho Tiritea water supply works, said that they would not get ii full staff of men there until better conditions prevailed, as tho men rould not get a night's floep owing to the cardplaying, etc., which went on. the engineer was instructed to inquire into the matter, ami to make a special effort to get more men on the job, so as to get it completed cxpeditionsly. The delegates to the annual meeting of tihe 31auchester Unity Order o.f Oddfellows arrived in Palmerston to-day for the opening of the conference to-morrow.
