PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(Hi Tclccraph.-SDCcial Correspondent.) Palmerson North, February 5. I lie Zraliiniliii Hall was crowded* last niffht. when a sacred imivert was held in anl ol tint expenses fund of the Pn I moreion lii-iiss linml in connection wild tho lorthcoiiiiug band ran tost at Ciisbornr. Mr. W. I'iii-k, president of tho band, presided, iiml lit (lie conclusion of an excellent prolamine lluinki-d (ill those who nail assisted to make tho Piitcrlainmeiit such a success. The ralloetion taken sit llh' doors nimiuiiicil to ovi<r .12:!, ami conil>ll -.cd coins from a Mivoroign down to a halfpenny. Tho employees of Mr. 11. L. Yuiing's printing establishment held their fir>l annual picnic at tho Ashliurst Domain on Saturday, in beautiful weather. All sorts of sports and pastimes were i <'tl in, and a. most pleasant time was spent. The Opera House was opened once more to-night with moving pictures, a Ideal syndicate having taken a Iciso of the building for this purpose. One of tho conditions of tho lease is that the. pictures must make way for any other entertainment that may come along. Tho Borough Council rail pictures for Fonio time most successfully, but had to give up when it found it impossible to secure a supply of good quality films. A. large number of members of tho Manawatu Motor Cycle Club indulged in a run from Palmerslon to l-'oxton yesterday. On arrival at Foxton the motorists were taken tn the beach in Mr. P. Danioll's launch Taniora, and a pleasant time was spant in bathing, etc. The road iu places was rather broken up with tho dry weather, and a. number of punctured (vies resulted. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) and Councillors Clausen and M'Cirty paid a visit of inspection to the Tiritea head works of the water supply this morning, to see how the raising of tho dam is getting on. Gootl progress is being made with the work, but great difficulty is experienced in getting men. only ten being engaged on it this morning. Another twenty could easily be absorbed, but harvesting ami other work being so plentiful just now, men are not available for the job. At the present time the town supply of water is being drawn from the old dam, while the new reservoir is being cleaned out. With the frequent rains -we have been having this summer, the old dam is proving equal to the occasion, but should a dry spell come tho new catching area will have to be used. At the present moment a large quantity of water is running to waste. If men 'were available the raising of the dam could easily Ik completed within two months. The pageant fair, for which tho Mayoress and a number of willing workers have been preparing for some time, will be opened at' the show grounds on Monday next, and continue till the following Friday. The fair has been organised to raise funds to wine out the debt on the High School and Technical School, thero being ft considerable debt, on the furnishings, etc., of both schools. The faiv r™mis?s to be a great success, judging by the great interest and the number or pcoplo working it up.
