WELLINGTON SUBURBS' SEAT.

MR. W. H. D. BELL AT 'MAKARA, A largely-attended meeting of tho olo<y tors was addressed by Mr. W. H. D. Bell, tho Reform party's candidate for Wellington Suburbs, at the schoolroom, Makara, last night. Councillor G. Monk was in tho chair. The candidate referred to the lack of opportunity which the present Government gavo to tho small man to get on Iho land, and tho lack of support which is given to those who have succeeded in getting on the land. Tho t Government was tireless in advocating tho opening up of Native lands, but how little had been done! Native lands were tho cheapest in the market, said Mr. Bell, and yet tho Government endeavoured to explain tho delay in land settlement by complaining of the high prices charged by Europeans. He advocated tho rapid settlement of Native lands, and encouragement to tho settlers. Mr. Bell pointed out that this policy, together with tho avoidance of extravagant administration, would reduce the cost of living, and must, therefore, bo as beneficial to the cityworking man as it would be to (lie farmer. At the conclusion of his nddross, the candidato was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence, 011 tlie motion of Mr. W. 11. Wallace, seconded by Mr. S. Bowler. A strong committee was set up to further Mr. Dell's candidature.

At a well-attended meeting at Nelson of tho supporters of Mr. John Graham, M.P., who is retiring from politics, it was derided to present him with a piece of plate at a public function, in recognition of his 18 years' Parliamentary service.— l'ress Association.
