WALKED INTO THE SEA. IBy Teleerach.—Vress Association.) . Napier, November 1. The body of a young woman, .vied twenty-seven, was iound on the be- *h early this morning', and was subsequently identified as that of a domestic servant named Bertha Rapley. The body had nothing on but a nightdress, but further along the beach was a cloak, and footprints indicating that she had deliberately walked into the sea. A letter was founil at the place where she was employed which stated that she had "brought disgrace on them all, and had better end it.

QUARRY FATALITY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Invercargill, November 1. A youth named Parsons, 17 vcars of a"e, was caugat in tho machinery at Greenhills quarry and shockingly mutilated. Ho died in a few hours. Deceased's parents resido at Bluff.

DISTRESSING EVENT. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondents , Masterton, November 1. A distressing accident occurred at Nircaha. The three-year-old daughter of Airs, wicholls was running, when she slipped and fell into a vessel containing pol.ard, which had boon boiled for calves. Tho little girl was severely burned, and subsequently succumbed to the injuries. A painful circumstance connected with tho casa is that Mrs. Nicholls's husbajid, a fow months ago. sustained fatal injuries at a sawmill in. proximity to the placo where the child met its death.

SUICIDE: AN OLD PENSIONER. (By Telegraph.—Presa Association.) Dunedin, November 1. An old age pensioner named Jas. Critchfield, aged 78 years, residing with his wife at 207 Main South Eoad, Caversham, committed suicide this afternoon by hanging himself in a shed, at the rear of his dwelling Apparently he had been worrying about some property transactions in which lie was engaged, but not to an extent to lead to any apprehension. At 3 o clock he went to Caversham Post Office to got his pension, and at 3.30 his wife saw him going in tho direction of tho shed. His body was discovered at 5 o clock.

DEATH UNDER AN ANAESTHETIC. Christchurch, November 1. Frederick Brandon Wroughton, aged fifteen, a boarder at Christ's. College, died yesterday while under an anaesthetic. \\ roughton met with an accident in tho gymnasium incurring a slight dislocation of the jaw. This was being attended to when he collapsed. Deceased was perfectly healthy, and organically sound, but tho thymus gland was enlarged. The anaesthetic was a mixture of chloroform and other. At tho inquest a verdict in aceordancc with the medical evidence wag returned.
